Indigenious Eyes Ecological Park Punta Cana

The Indigenous Eyes Ecological Park and Reserve is a 1500 acre private reserve owned and maintained by the Puntacana Ecological Foundation. It’s located on the grounds of the Puntacana Hotel (See map 7).

The Indigenous Eyes (Ojos Indigenas) are crystal clear, freshwater lagoons fed by the underground river Yauya. The Taino Indians referred to the lagoons as “eyes” because of their shape. They are part of a lowland subtropical forest situated on top of limestone, and home to over 500 species of plants and 100 species of birds.  Read More→

James Currie, the Steve Irwin of bird watching, recently visited Punta Cana to make a video about the endangered Ridgway’s Hawk. Most of it was filmed on the grounds of Puntacana Resort & Club with collaboration from the Puntacana Ecological Foundation.

Also featured in the videos are rhinoceros iguanas, the solenodon (an extremely rare, venomous shrew like creature who’s origins date back to prehistoric times ie. 76 million years ago) and the hutia (a Caribbean rodent facing extinction).  Read More→
