On Saturday 20th March the 3rd Punta Cana Carnival took place in Punta Cana Village opposite the airport. The event was hosted by the Puntacana Group, which manages the Puntacana Resort & Club and the airport.
A brief history of Carnival in the Dominican Republic:
The first settlers on the island – the Tainos – enjoyed wild, pagan celebrations focused around the spring equinox and harvesting time for their principal crops. They wore body paint, masks, primitive but colourful costumes made from feathers, shells, beads – anything that nature provided. Dancing was accompanied by drumming, wooden flutes, maracas and conch shell blowers. Upon the arrival of Columbus these spiritual celebrations took on a mix of Christianity and were a kind of party where people could let loose before the austere period of abstinence and Lent. The Carnival is coming to town! This Saturday 20th March at 4pm in Punta Cana Village (see Area Map and Map 7) you can enjoy the festivities at the 3rd Punta Cana Carnival.
Over 1,000 carnival characters from all over the island will strut their stuff along the boulevard opposite the airport in Punta Cana Village from 4pm onwards. The event is hosted by the Puntacana Group, which manages the Puntacana Resort & Club and the airport.
Take a taxi to join in the fun and games – ask to take you to the Carnival at Punta Cana Village opposite the airport. And be sure to bring your camera!
