The Home in Paradise is a whimsical home improvement blog interspersed with snippets of Punta Cana life experiences. Its written by Punta Cana resident Clara Gonzales. Clara’s home town is Monte Cristi on the north west coast of the Dominican Republic but she spent many years abroad and in the island’s capital Santo Domingo before moving to Punta Cana. Clara is a wizard at design and d.i.y. and her blog is full of beautifully photographed, clever and creative home decoration ideas – often recycling nondescript everyday objects and giving them a new lease of life. In response to our History of Punta Cana post, some of our readers have kindly sent us more fascinating, old photos of Punta Cana.
Here are some sent in by Susan Hardy (alias Sukie63on from Trip Advisor’s forums). The photos are from her mother’s trip to Punta Cana way back sometime between 1982 and 1986. The photos show Bavaro Beach Resort (which closed in May 2010). This was one of the first hotels built in Punta Cana (the 3rd actually after Puntacana Resort & Club and Club Med). Lillian Mitchell (Susan’s mom) said they flew into Santo Domingo – I guess the airport at Punta Cana wasn’t served by all airlines in those days. Read More→
Most of the newly constructed houses in the Dominican Republic are built from concrete blocks. However, in the campo, or countryside you will still find many of the old style houses. These are made from wood and have tin roofs. They are colorfully painted and the bright colors really stand out against the greenery of the countryside. Read More→
