You can use taxis for Punta Cana airport transfers, private tours or just getting from A to B. They are the best option for traveling around at night. For trips within Punta Cana ask your hotel front desk to call you a taxi.
Getting to your hotel
Airport transfers provided by your tour operator may take longer as you’ll have to wait for everyone to board the bus and then they will stop at various resorts along the way. To avoid this extra waiting time you can book a private transfer with one of the taxi companies listed below. Private transfer prices are comparable with the tour operator prices, if not cheaper, and they will be happy to make a quick stop along the way to pick up shopping supplies or a cold beer for the journey.

Airport based taxis usually quote per ride for up to 4 passengers including the luggage which will fit in the trunk of the car or on the backseat of the minibus. Airport Taxis are unionised and charge fixed rates, but always confirm price with driver before setting off.
Prearranged private transfers usually quote per ride for up to 5 passengers (can accommodate more on request) including all luggage.
If you’re pleased with a driver’s service then take his cel phone number and name so you can contact him if you decide to take a trip somewhere. They will often offer a better rate for repeat customers. This is a great way to get a guided tour of Punta Cana and the surrounding areas. They will take you to see whatever you’re interested in – locals stores, a school, the Basilica in Higuey, a private home or a sugar cane plantation.
Note: taxi drivers do not hold official tour guide permits. This could be an issue if you use one for a guided tour of Santo Domingo. Tour guides are subject to random control checks (especially in the capital’s Colonial Zone). If your “guide” is stopped by the control authorities he will be asked to prove he is operating as a tour guide legally. If your guide is not he will be detained and you will be left stranded. Certified tour guides will have a badge they must wear whilst guiding.
