Dining explained: Thalassa is only buffet/a la carte for breakfast. Lunch and dinner are a la carte serving Mediteranean food.
CataTapa is advertised as a tapas bar but it is actually an a la carte restaurant, fine dining, serving Spanish style cuisine.
The “snack bar” Sea Blue is really an a la carte lunch area beside the beach pool. They serve upscale snacks as well as high end sandwiches, sushi, salads etc. Not a snack bar in the traditional sense.
Bars: exclusive to Royal Bavaro guests – Maloo Bar (oceanside) and Piano Bar in the lobby (with an outdoor smoking area)
Private beach area: Yes
Guests have access to all the other restaurants, bars and facilities at the adjacent Catalonia Bavaro resort.
Water conditions: The water at both Catalonia Royal and Catalonia Bavaro is calm all year round with very little to no fast boat traffic. No surf for boogie boarding here. No rip tides or strong currents.
Snorkeling: both Catalonia resorts offer the best snorkeling in Punta Cana from right off the beach. You can snorkel outside the roped off swim zone where it is only about an arms length deep so no boat traffic here.
In front of Catalonia Royal there is a concrete barrier 35 yards from the beach that fish like to hang around. To the right of Catalonia Royal there is a long, shallow area that is also good.
Snorkeling gear is free for 1 hour each day, first come first served (20$US returnable deposit) Snorkel trips to the outer reefs where there are more fish, 5 minute boat ride away, available at the watersports center.
Golf: Catalonia Caribe Golf Club on site and Cabeza de Toro Golf 5 minutes shuttle ride away.
